The Father Ho Lung & Friends Foundation provides evangelization to thousands of men, women and children of all walks of life through musical productions performed by the Fr Ho Lung & Friends music ministry, the performance arm of the Foundation. The musicals are written by Fr. Ho Lung and consist of original music presented with dance and drama. It is the belief of Fr Ho Lung that “Theatre must portray the lessons of new life, full of hope as we struggle to bring forth a new vision, portrayed in religious theatre which reflects God and His marvellous graces”. Expressing love of life, of God and of the poor, the music is performed in theatres in Jamaica and abroad and is also used in liturgical services throughout the Caribbean. In Jamaica, eight successive musical productions have been awarded the Jamaica Music Industry Award, the highest award presented by the music industry, along with many other awards. The performing group has also been instrumental in obtaining funds to support the works of mercy of the Missionaries of the Poor.
Faith Centre, the MOP’s first Apostolate, opened in September 1984, with the assistance of the Jamaica Self-Help Foundation. Later other benefactors including those from Canada made donations to sustain the centre and the others that were to follow.
In August 1987, Jacob’s Well was established at 74 Hanover Street as a place of shelter for 75 destitute adults and has now more than 80 old women, physically and mentally retarded residents.
In November 1990, an unused warehouse at 59-61 Tower Street, was acquired and converted into Good Shepherd, a night shelter for 40 street people. It now includes men, who were abandoned, elderly, mentally and physically disabled.
As poverty worsened and many more homeless asked to come in, the MOP opened The Lord’s Place in November 1994. Located at 34-36 High Holborn Street in Kingston, this facility cares for orphans, malnourished children, the elderly, retarded young women and those terminally ill with HIV-AIDS.
In September 2001, Bethlehem Home was opened and blessed for at-risk and disabled children at 34-36 High Holborn Street. Presently, the home houses over 60 of such children.
At Mount Tabor, located in Golden Spring, St Andrew, the Beatitudes Home was blessed and opened in July 2008. It provides a home for many physically and mentally disabled children. The Mount Tabor Monastery and Retreat Centre is located nearby on lands donated for this purpose.
On September 11, 2010, Fr. Ho Lung and the Missionaries of the Poor broke ground for the Holy Innocents Crisis Centre for 200 distressed mothers and their babies. This is the Missionaries of the Poor’s answer to the Lord’s call to protect life. This centre provides support and assistance during pregnancy, prayer and spiritual support, temporary financial assistance, job placement, day care and lodging, facilities for mother and newborn, counselling for crisis pregnancy and ante-natal/post-natal/follow-up care.
Many people have continued to donate to the MOP because people have come to know about the Brothers of the MOP and their works in the ghetto at the centres such as Faith Centre, Jacob’s Well. The also know of the work in the early days at the Gun Court and the Eventide Home. They know that the works in the prisons continues. The productions put on by the Music Ministry provide a wonderful vehicle for expressions of good will to support the lesson of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to look after the poor and forgotten ones.
In addition to these facilities, the centres have the following community outreach programs:
In a world where many go to bed hungry, we have the power to make a difference. Lets nourish both bodies and souls.
Can you donate as little as JM$1,000 or US$20, or more? Any amount donated will go far to improve someone’s life.
